Pinot Noir Spumante Brut
Friuli Grave

Pinot Noir

This sparkling wine is understated in its beauty. the bubbles are approachable, the flavors are refined, and the finish is relaxing. A quiet beauty with an elegant bouquet that recalls red currant and raspberry, with flowery notes of rose and a minerality of crushed rock, and bread crust. The bubbles are soft and creamy with a lift of acidity in the delicate finish.

Points of Interest

All estate Pinot Noir made into the most drinkable of sparkling wines. Made in the Charmat method, like Prosecco, this wine sees more time with the lees and a slower fermentation process to develop the refinement and nuance that makes this a show stopper. Like a perfectly performed ballad at the music concert that makes the room go quiet. Only a small dosage is used to balance the freshness.
Ribolla Gialla
Venezie IGT

Ribolla Gialla

Another local favorite, the Friuli region is the farthest west this grape is typically grown, also found in Slovenia. A grape naturally high in acidity, the mineral character is apparent in the nose along with white flowers, wild grass, and pithy citrus. Fresh and clean on the palate, there is a distinct texture that is both firm and edgy. The finish and texture make it wonderful with raw seafood like sushi.

Points of Interest

Ribolla is the grape and gialla means yellow in Italian. This yellow grape has a thick skin and is naturally high in acidity. It is a hearty variety that has subtle aromatics and a compelling texture. The low yields at the Maccan estate along with a lengthy period on the lees helps create something special, both compelling and enjoyable. An excellent companion to clean flavors like the ones found in Japanese cooking.
Pinot Grigio
Friuli Grave DOC

Pinot Grigio

The Maccan Pinot Grigio is distinct, both for the color and for a complexity that is often missing in the Pinot Grigio world. A lush orchard fruit character, with aromatics of both flowers and wild herbs. It has a dense fruity structure with peach and apple skin, sustained by a distinctly tangy finish and freshness. The richness of fruit and texture make it an excellent food pairing.

Points of Interest

With two days of skin contact, locally it is referred to as a “ramato” which translates to copper, referring to the color that is imparted from the skin. Pinot Grigio is a mutation of Pinot Noir and the color can vary from a pale pinkish green to a delicate purple with hints of orange. When grown in the right rocky soils with a cool climate, you can produce a wine with depth and complexity.
Chardonnay
Friuli Grave DOC

Chardonnay

The people of Friuli love their white wine. The care and quality that goes into this Chardonnay is a classic example of the area. A decidedly elegant bouquet of apple, white flowers, vanilla, and tropical citrus. It is a dry and savory wine that strikes a balance between the richness we love about Chardonnay and a fresh citrusy finish. Unoaked, for a pure expression of the grape and terroir.

Points of Interest

The white wines of Friuli benefit from the ancient flood plain between the Alpine Mountain range to the north, with concentrations of limestone, and the Adriatic sea just to the south, which helps moderate temperature. Even in the warm summer months there are cooler breezes from the sea by day and from the mountains at night. All of this contributes to delicious wine with lively freshness.
Cabernet Franc
Friuli Grave DOC

Cabernet Franc

If you are a fan of the Cab Franc, from the Loire valley in France, like we are, then this might be right up your alley. A fresh expression with wild brambly fruits, cherry skin, and savory notes of pepper, earth, and wild grass. This medium bodied wine has great tension and energy on the palate, full of flavor with a dry and savory elegance through the finish.

Points of Interest

Aged a minimum of one year before bottling, a small percentage is aged in barrel to help round out the final blend. For the Maccan family, the goal is always to let nature express itself as purely as possible, showcasing the environmental practices in the vineyards, and minimum intervention in the winery. The Maccan family express the history and the beautiful terroir of this special place inside each bottle.
Refosco
Friuli Grave DOC

Refosco Dal Peduncolo Rosso

Refosco is not a household name anywhere but in Friuli. One of the main native red grapes of the area, it is known for its complex and savory flavors. The Maccan Refosco is pervasive with notes of wild red fruits, smoky spice, and a rustic earthiness. This ancient variety captivates with a medium body of complex, savory density balanced by subtle tannins and a fresh minerality.

Points of Interest

Friuli is unlike any other part of Italy with Germanic and Slovenian influences that date back centuries. The region’s capital city, Trieste, was once the major port for the Austrian Hungarian empire and it was in 1977 that the city was officially recognized as part of Italy. They do things their own way here and have amazing local varieties and culture.
