At A Glance
Françoise and her children, Nicolas and Coline, represent the 5th and 6th generation of winemakers at the prestigious Clos du Calvaire family estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape (previously Vignobles Mayard). The certified organic, 33-hectare estate is shared by Françoise and her sister Béatrice. The historical parcels were planted by their great, great grandfather, Gratien Mayard, starting in 1989. With very old vines and meticulous farming, the estate uses forward-thinking ideas like no-tilling, spontaneous fermentation, amphora aging and minimal sulfur, to produce lively wines with complexity and great aging potential. Built on the experience of generations, Françoise has worked for the family winery for over 30 years and manages over 20 parcels with some of the best terroir in the appellation.

“Our conception of viticulture places the biodiversity and quality of our terroirs in a central position. Thus, we are working to restructure the soils of our plots by sowing different species of plants: plant covers. These covers capture the energy of the sun to keep freshness, water and humidity in our soils, when they decompose they bring a large amount of organic matter which benefits the living organisms of the soil and the vine” –Françoise Roumieux
