Varietal Notes

This ancient white grape creates an elegant Spumante and, in this example, stands alone as a still wine that give wine drinkers an alternative to better known varietals. The reward for experimentation is a wine that just might trigger a full-on exploration of Italian white wines. The Ribolla Gialla grape arrived in Friuli in the 13th century – a native of Greece that historians say travelled to the region via Slovenia. Its wines are characteristically light and crisp, with hints of apples, citrus and almonds. It is often called just Ribolla.The 19th Century phylloxera epidemic took a hard toll on Ribolla plantings and many Friuli vineyards owners replanted with French wine grapes like Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. By the 1990s less than 1 percent of all white Friuli wines created under the DOC contained Ribolla. By the turn of the 21st century, international interest in the wines of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia had led to an increase in plantings of the grape.
