Fun fact about New Zealand: New Zealand is arguably the most environmentally conscious country in the world for wine with about 98% of the vineyards certified sustainable under SWNZ (Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand). David Clouston and his team are likewise strong advocates for preserving the land that produces some of the world’s most enjoyable wines in Marlborough.
Before returning to his homeland in New Zealand, owner and winemaker, David Clouston traveled the world experiencing different farming and winemaking techniques. David’s experience garnered over 25 vintages worldwide in countries such as Chile, Spain, the USA, France, and Australia. All of his experience is the driving force behind these fun, approachable wines at Black Cottage. The idea behind the Black Cottage label is to represent the terroir and character of Marlborough to the world on an everyday basis with wines that are simple, balanced, and utterly enjoyable. The name, Black Cottage, comes from the guest house on the property that you can actually book from their website and visit. Nestled amongst the vineyards and olive trees alongside Marlborough’s Opawa river, this cottage is used for entertaining friends and travelers alike. Dave uses his worldly experience in winemaking with the best local fruit from the Awatere and Wairau sub-regions of Marlborough to make wines full of gusto and life! We found these wines express a fun-loving nature and friendliness that inspired the team here at Uva to get into the wine importing business in the first place. Because if you don’t know already, every wine tastes better when there is good food and good friends, old and new, to share it with!!
“At Black Cottage, we are dedicated to producing New Zealand wines full of ‘gusto’. Selecting unique parcels of fruit from Marlborough and Central Otago, we strive to create very special wines which are approachable and delicious.”
